International Student Insurance Information

FL Board of Governors regulation 6.009 requires that all international students with F and J status have medical insurance prior to registration. Proof must be submitted to the International Insurance Department located within the Health Information Management and Compliance Office at Student Health Services.

Students will receive a “HEINS” service indicator (health insurance hold) on their myUCF student account. Students will not be allowed to register for classes or continue enrollment without complying with the medical insurance requirement. There are no exceptions to this rule.

The medical insurance requirement can be met in one of two ways:

  • By purchasing the UCF-recommended plan through Academic HealthPlans (AHP).
  • By submitting proof of alternative insurance that is compliant with all the Florida Board of Governor’s requirements.

Coverage must be continuous. It cannot lapse during school breaks, even if you return to your country during the break.

UCF Student Health Services has identified several alternative insurance plans that you may also choose from. Although these plans meet the minimum Florida Board of Governor’s requirements, these plans may have reduced benefits and additional exclusions compared to the UCF-recommended Academic HealthPlan option. UCF does not endorse alternative insurance plans, and students are strongly advised to review the policies of alternative plans prior to purchasing coverage.

If you choose an alternative plan, you are not required to provide a Compliance Form. You are required to submit proof of insurance. This document will include your:

  • Name
  • Policy number
  • Plan effective and termination dates

Click Here to view the Alternative Insurance Plans.

UCF Student Health Services will accept any insurance that is compliant with ALL the Florida Board of Governors’ requirements for international students. If you have existing coverage that has not been pre-approved by Student Health Services, you must submit the following information for consideration by our office:

  • Proof of insurance
    • Name
    • Policy number
    • Plan effective and termination dates
  • Compliance Form
    • Completed by you and the insurance company

The Compliance Form attests to the fact that your plan meets all of the Florida Board of Governors’ requirements. This form must be signed and stamped by the insurance company. Our office reserves the right to verify any submitted Compliance Forms independently. A Compliance Form is not required for any pre-approved alternative insurance plans.

Plans that do not meet all of the Florida Board of Governors Requirements will not be accepted. Please review the Florida Board of Governor’s requirements prior to purchasing any alternative plan.

Students whose insurance is provided by a government sponsor will require specific documentation based on their sponsor. The required documents for all pre-approved groups are listed below:

Group Required Documentation
Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission United Healthcare insurance card, financial guarantee
Embassy of Kuwait United Healthcare insurance card, proof of insurance letter
Embassy of the State of Qatar Cigna insurance card, financial guarantee
Embassy of Oman Cigna insurance card, financial guarantee
Embassy of United Arab Emirates Aetna insurance card, financial guarantee

If your sponsor is not listed above, please submit your insurance information and a statement of financial support for review by our office.

The College of Graduate Studies will provide health insurance from Academic HealthPlans for supported Graduate Assistants. All GTAs or GRAs who are eligible for insurance purchased by the College of Graduate Studies cannot turn in documentation directly to Student Health Services. Confirmation of insurance must be provided directly by the College of Graduate Studies.

NOTE: DO NOT SELF-ENROLL. If you are supported with coverage, this will be done by the College of Graduate Studies. You can reach out to them at gradassistantship@ucf.edu with any questions.

  1. Complete your assistantship agreement with your hiring department.
  2. Accept the insurance award on your myUCF account following an email from the College of Graduate Studies.
  3. Once your agreement is processed, the College of Graduate Studies will contact Student Health Services to lift your insurance hold.

You must allow at least 2-4 business days for the College of Graduate Studies to process your application. Insurance holds will not be temporarily released without confirmation of insurance from the College of Graduate Studies. Inquiries regarding the status of your insurance hold should be directed to the College of Graduate Studies. Their contact information can be found below:
